The Little White Bird takes its name from a book written by James Matthew Barrie. Several chapters are written in a softer tone than the dark, aggressive undertones of the rest of the book. These chapters introduce the character of Peter Pan, and although there exists a large similarity between the original and Barrie's later adaptation for the stage, the original maintains a darker atmosphere. Regardless of the surrounding narration of the original text, the story was written for children, and the music takes several passages from the book that focus on wonder and illusion.
